How They Work
Boomerang groups are a great way to not just meet people but to get to really know them. Combined with this is the chance to expand your spiritual journey in dialogue with others who have the same desire to grow. So it is the ideal situation to address real spirituality (which, at Nexus, is our attempt to become fully human – in line with the way God created us). We keep the groups to between 6 and 10 people and we meet weekly at someone’s home. This fall we are offering two types of groups:
Winter/Spring – 2019
2.THE RIDICULOUS JOURNEY: FOLLOWING A NOBODY FROM NOWHERE
THIS GROUP HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR THIS TERM
Tues. evening (Starting in February – at Warren’s place – 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.)
Each of us gets to choose the paths we will travel. They will of course contain unforeseen surprises
of both the welcome and unwelcome sort.
Where shall we go you and I?
Shall we go along together? How shall we get there? And how will we know when “there” is now “here”?
“Come, follow me,” a voice interrupts.
Who is this? A wandering homeless man. Why should we give up all of this to follow this nobody from nowhere?
It is a ridiculous journey. Which, of course, is the only kind there is. So, let us begin …
A search for purpose and meaning in the events and choices of our lives. A costly journey with an unknown destination. A Middle Eastern homeless man from twenty centuries ago and why he still stirs the souls and imagination of so many.
This 7-session series on Jesus’ invitation to follow him includes films by Nadia Bolz-Weber, Greg Boyle, Brené Brown, Emmanuel Katongole, Rachel Held Evans, Richard Rohr, and Rowan Williams, visual liturgies from Kelly Stewart Hall, Thomas Merton, Travis Reed, and Ann Voscamp and reflections by Rich Nelson.
These resources lead to great questions and conversations. This is the second time we have run this group. The first time we had 14 people take part and they had a really wonderful time of discussion and discovery.
Everyone will receive a flash drive with all the resources (videos, questions, stories, prayers)

3. FOLLOWING UP BRAD’S TEACHING THERE IS LIMITED ROOM IN THIS GROUP – CONTACT MURRAY DIRECTLY – mbakerivcf@rogers.com
Thurs. (starting in Feb. 7 ) at Murray and Jane’s – 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.
These groups follow-up on Brad’s teaching from the previous Sunday. As you may have discovered, Brad’s teachings are meant to be “jumping off points” for discussion and learning. This group is focused on questions and discussion that flow naturally out of Sunday’s teaching. Prior to each meeting you will receive a list of questions based on the teaching and of course we are open to any question(s) you may have personally. Every week is a lively discussion that offers many opportunities to learn and grow.
4. RETREAT IN DAILY LIFE THERE IS STILL SOME ROOM IN THIS GROUP FOR 3 MORE PEOPLE – DUE TO SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS THIS GROUP WILL NOT START UNTIL MID-APRIL – THOSE WHO HAVE OR DO SIGN UP WILL BE CONTACTED DIRECTLY ABOUT START TIMES
Lead by Susan Murphy (5 weeks: to be arranged)
Many of us do not have the luxury of being able to take any extended time away from our busy lives for some days of retreat and spiritual renewal. However, by participating in a Retreat in Daily Life, you commit to spending just 30 minutes a day over the course of 5 weeks, in which you can experience the same deepening of your spirit and your connection to God!
As part of this group (limited to 4-6 people), you would be committing to:
– Attending one evening for the opening session as below;
– Spending 30 minutes a day for 5 weeks in prayer and contemplation on the scriptures that are provided;
– Meeting at a pre-arranged time once a week one-on-one with Susan Murphy who is a trained spiritual director for a 30-45 min session of spiritual direction
– Attending the final evening for the closing session as below.
There is a nominal fee – $50 – (we have financial help available for anyone who may need this) and the time commitment as outlined above. The goal is to learn to engage with the Scriptures in a meaningful and prayerful way and to deepen one’s connection and relationship with God. You will also get a chance to experience the value of spiritual mentoring.
